Are you like the folks who approach me for help with their internet business… a bit unsure of how to make it really go?
There are three things you need to make the business go:
- A product to sell that people want to buy. (Yours or someone else’s. Hopefully a product you can make some money with.)
- A killer sales message, on a website, that collects the names and email addresses of visitors (I prefer to call them guests) as well as sells the product. (This will have to be connected to methods to collect the addresses, capture the order, and collect the money. If you’re selling someone else’s product, they should handle much of this.)
- A way to drive people to the website.
All three are important. But here we’re concerned about number 2, creating the killer sales message, and getting it online.
If you’ve spent any time looking at the business, you know that the top copywriters in the business charge upwards of $30,000 to write your sales message. Some even want a percentage of the business. (And there’s no guarantee it will work.)
Wow. Can I do it myself? Sure. To make it work best you need to follow a proven system for writing a sales message. Here’s what I was looking for to help my clients:
- A proven format for creating a sales message.
- An easy way to get my information into the sales message.
- An easy way to transform that into a website complete with pictures, graphics, etc.
- A method to test headlines and testimonials so the page can get better and better.
- A way to make changes easily, add new testimonials as they come in, even reformat the whole thing if I need to.
- Automatic tracking of unique visitor page views and conversion rate (how often someone clicks to buy).
- Easy ways to publish my page, with or without a separate hosting account.
I looked, but I couldn’t find it. Here’s what I did find: Software programs that were easy to use but generated copy that didn’t make sense, and that was hard to edit. Others were easy to edit but you really had no idea what to put in the spaces where it wanted information. I also found website generators that had no connection to marketing and that were terribly confusing.
Most interesting: These sales letter generators didn’t use their own programs to create the sales letters for the software. That should be a clue!
I was left with one solution: Have my company produce the software. And we did! This was no quick post at elance or rentacoder, either. It was a 15-month project with full time attention by our programmers. We invested thousands of dollars to create a system that would do what was needed… and now, it works, and it has far surpassed anything we imagined when we started.
